Last night, @Misstoya J sent me a couple of tweets asking me to address the meaning of the word “akata” by Nigerians and other Africans because they had seen it on Twitter. It felt cheap to just talk about the word without talking about the larger dynamic behind it. There’s not really a more jarring travel experience than spending two weeks getting used to being in Japan and then going immediately to Nigeria. They’re opposite places in almost every way places can be opposite.Other than being ‘African’, men from the continent are not necessarily better. While we may have a shared culture, these men also sometimes come with negative socio cultural beliefs. I grew up in a predominantly black neighbourhood in Prince George’s County and went to an all black high school. When I am approached by a Black American man, i generally don’t even take their interest in me seriously.

Since they started talking online 18 months ago, she has sent “thousands” of payments totalling more than $1.4 million (£910,000) to South Africa, Nigeria and Benin.

“I've actually never met Chris in person but I am definitely in love with him,” Sarah said. Chris and I have discussed getting married - I believe Chris does consider me his wife.” Chris claimed he was originally from Milan and moved to the US 18 years ago, saying he was on a business trip to South Africa when they met and is now stuck in Benin because of "trouble" with the government.

I’ve spoken to several of my African girlfriends and I was surprised to find that most like myself have also never dated Black American men. I recently met a Black man in the Bronx and we’ve been exchanging text messages. My culture is very important to me and I would ideally want to have that in common with my partner. Or am i like others who experienced some kind of teasing about being African in high school simply retaliating by holding out on our Black American brothers?

Now I live in Harlem, the mecca of Black American life. In all this time, I cant say that I’ve ever dated a Black American or a White American man. I’ve always said that the reason why i didnt date Black American men was because of the cultural differences between Africans and Black Americans. What’s more, I have friends and friends of friends who have dated, dating, have married or are currently married to white and Hispanic women and women of Asian background.
